Module 1:  Introduction to the Ear & Hearing

What You'll Learn In This Module

This level is for everyone.  Knowing you have a hearing disorder is one thing, but understanding it more will help you to be better prepared to navigate it.  Learn about the mechanics of the ear as well as the psychological aspects of hearing loss.  You are here because you are in search of new knowledge.  You may find that you already knew most of the information here, but hopefully it's a good review and strengthens your confidence.  We will talk about realistic expectations and how, unfortunately, even people with normal hearing struggle in difficult listening situations so this information is meant to help you maximize your hearing potential.  With that being said, you need to write down your own goals of what you'd like to achieve.  Sometimes it doesn't involve hearing everything, but to understand more than before and while using less energy.

If you have already been fit with hearing devices, then you can start doing easy listening activities beyond watching these videos this week.

The first activity is trying to wear your hearing instruments at least 6 hours per day.  Even if it's quiet, you should put them on because there are a lot of little sounds in your world that have meaning.

You should start turning on a talk radio or podcast program for 15 minutes a day. This can be the weather report, a story, or the news that is brought to you by audio format only.

You should also try turning on familiar music and listening to songs you recognize for at least 30 minutes a day.  Did you know music is great for your brain?  Did you know music can change your mood? Well, then, let's get listening!
